Chapter 18

Richard and Inspector Hassan drew up outside the Whitely house. The shutters had been closed against the bright sunlight, and Richard hoped also out of respect for a man who had lost his life.

Richard had deliberately decided not to let Genevieve Whitely know he planned to make a second visit. There was something about their last conversation Richard had found unsettling. He knew Camille had certainly felt it, and he thought if he caught Genevieve off guard, it would very possibly reveal something she had not at the time disclosed to him.

He had felt that a wife would have, should have, known more about her husband’s working life. They were a couple with a child and Genevieve was expecting another baby. Why did Genevieve not know more about George’s work? She had nonchalantly passed it off as though it was of no importance to her. He mentally shrugged. Perhaps it had not been important to her.

He thought back to his marriage to Helen, Richard’s wife before she had succumbed to the Spanish Influenza at the end of 1918. Their marriage had been desperately unhappy with Helen not showing the slightest interest in his work, or whether it put him in danger and was unsafe. He remembered it had hurt him terribly.

She had no interest in him at all, primarily because they had not been fortunate in having children. Their failure to have a family had divided them, and Richard often felt that going home was so stressful he would rather remain at work.

She blamed him, citing that it was because he was never at home that they had not had a child, but Richard knew it was more than that. One or the other of them was infertile. It happened, he knew, but it was something she would not accept. It was his fault and because of it she wanted the relationship between them to die. Instead, she herself passed like so many others during that time.

He had felt guilty at her assertions for a while, spending inordinate amounts of time at Scotland Yard because he could not face walking into the house and being ignored. Helen had given up cooking for him, saying, “Why would I? I never know when you’re going to be here.” It had been unpleasant when she was there and it had been unpleasant when she had passed, but gradually he willed himself to spend more time at his home, choosing not to work so much, and learning to live a more balanced life.

Then he’d met Camille, which had changed everything.
